Passenger Seat Removal
in the 1992 Mitsubishi 3000GT and Dodge Stealth
by Jeff Lucius
Introduction
Removing the passenge seat provides access to the following:
- the carpet for cleaning, repair, or removal
- the body wiring harness that runs below the door
- the seat belt switch connector
- the stereo system amplifier if so equiped
- the seat itself for repair or cleaning
The tools needed are a small slotted screwdriver, a 15-mm socket and wrench, and a torque wrench. The seat in my 1992 Stealth TT weighs about 46 pounds on a bathroom scales.
Removal
1. Front anchor caps. Move the seat to the rear. Gently pry off the anchor covers by hand or with a small slotted screwdriver. Both front covers are designed the same. Move the "arms" sideways away from the seat a little and then pull the cover up and to the front of the car.
2. Rear anchor covers. Move the seat to the front. Gently pry off the anchor covers by hand or with a small slotted screwdriver. The inboard and outboard covers are designed differently. For the outbord cover, move the "arm" sideways away from the seat a little and then pull the cover up and to the side of the car. For the inboard cover, pull its side away from the seat and then pull the cover to the back of the car.
3. Anchors. Use a 15-mm socket to remove the two rear bolts and two front nuts.
4. Electrical connections. Tilt the seat up and toward the back of the car. Disconnect the seat belt switch connector. Some models also have the stereo amplifier mounted here.
5. Remove the seat. Lift the seat up (it weighs about 46 pounds) and maneuver it out through the passenger door opening.
Installation
Installation is basically just the reverse of the removal steps. Torque the anchor bolts to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs) and the anchor nuts to 30 Nm (22 ft-lbs).
