Location of Oil Pressure Sensors
for the Mitsubishi 3000GT/Dodge Stealth
by Jeff Lucius
Our engines have two oil pressure sensors (or "sending units"). One sensor (connector B-36 in the electrical circuit and configuration diagrams) is the Oil Pressure Gauge Unit and connects to the oil pressure gauge in the combination gauge in the center of the dash. The other sensor (connector B-37 in the electrical circuit and configuration diagrams) is the Oil Pressure Switch and connects to a warning light in the combination meter (in front of the steering wheel). The Gauge Unit is a variable resistor that outputs a voltage level depending on the oil pressure in the oil passage between the oil filter and the engine. The Switch is a normally-open switch that closes when the oil pressure is below a certain level. The Switch is located also in the oil passage between the oil filter and the rest of engine block. The manual states that oil pressure at warm curb idle should be 80 kPa or 11.6 psi. Mitsubishi also warns that oil pressure at cold start-up can reach 256 psi!
For DOHC engines, both sensors are located next to each other on the left side of the block (near the driver) and above the oil pan (see picture below). For SOHC engines, the Oil Pressure Gauge Unit is located next to the oil filter (on the right side of the block) and the Oil Pressure Switch is located on the left side of the block.
